How to get more Google reviews, ethically

GuestEcho Team · June 27, 2026

Google reviews carry outsized weight: they follow your property into Maps, into search results, into every "hotels near me" moment. Growing them is worth systematic effort, and none of it requires grey tactics.

What is off the table

Paying for reviews, review gating (only inviting guests you know are happy while hiding the form from others), and employee authored reviews all violate platform rules and, in several jurisdictions, consumer law. Beyond the ethics, platforms have gotten good at detecting patterns; the penalty is losing reviews you earned honestly.

What actually works

Ask everyone, route by sentiment. Send every guest a post stay message asking how it went. Happy guests get a direct link to your Google review page; unhappy guests get a private conversation. You are not gating the review form; you are triaging your own outreach, and every guest who insists can still review you publicly.

Remove every step. The link must go straight to the review composer, not your listing page. On property, a QR code at checkout or in the room does the same job for guests who prefer the moment over the email.

Time it right. One to three days after checkout, once, politely. No sequences, no nagging.

Reply to what arrives. Reviewers who get a reply become repeat reviewers, and readers who see replies become reviewers too. The flywheel is real.

Volume follows friction removal with surprising speed: most properties that systematise this see review volume double within two to three months.
