How to benchmark your reputation against competitors properly

Is a 4.3 on Google good? Unanswerable. If every comparable property in your town sits at 4.0, you are the local leader. If they are all 4.6, you have a problem with a number that looks perfectly healthy on its own.
Build the right comp set
Benchmark against properties a guest would genuinely consider instead of you: similar location, price band and category. Three to five is plenty. Include the aspirational leader in your market; their reviews are a free consulting report on what your shared guests value.
Watch deltas, not levels
A competitor's absolute score matters less than its direction. A rival moving from 4.1 to 4.4 over two quarters is telling you something changed: a renovation, new management, a review collection push. Review count velocity matters too; volume growth usually precedes rating movement.
Read their reviews like scouting reports
Your competitors' negative reviews are a list of dissatisfied guests in your market describing exactly what would win them over. Their positive reviews tell you the table stakes. Both are public.
Make it a habit, not a project
Benchmarking done once in a spreadsheet dies there. Track your comp set's ratings and review counts automatically, glance at the trend line weekly, and dig in only when a delta appears. Fifteen minutes a month, honestly spent, beats a quarterly deep dive nobody reads.
